I chose Filtrona primarily because of their very impressive graduate scheme. I defy anyone one to find one that betters it. For me, this was the biggest pull. It was being revamped at the time and there was a great deal of enthusiasm for it - all deserved, although I wasn't to know this until later.

After speaking to four of the people at Filtrona, I was convinced I would get a lot of learning experiences and plenty of opportunity. I was also attracted by the chance to travel and work overseas. What I was after was a finance role where I would be supported through my accountancy qualification in a company which would keep me challenged and encourage my development.

The role of VP Finance is very unstructured so every day brings a new set of challenges. I love the variety of what I do although it does mean I have to be very disciplined and organized. Some of the main responsibilities are: providing costing support for a new piece of business; helping to develop new reporting mechanisms; ensuring that financial controls are adequate; preparing the budget and strategic plan; reviewing proposals for new capital equipment; analyzing financial performance so as to make operational improvements. I have seven direct reports and more than 50 indirect, across finance, purchasing, shipping, material handling and general admin.

The best thing about my job is that I love being involved in so many different areas of the business - that breadth of experience is very rare in other functions so I am thrilled I am able to get so involved in helping improve the business. My role definitely allows me to make an impact and the huge variety of what I do keeps me energized and excited to come to work every day.

In terms of my future, I've had had some fantastic experiences so far, worked with some great people and always been given challenging opportunities, so I definitely see my future with Filtrona. Longer term I would like to get an MBA, (which the company has a history of supporting), and perhaps consider a move into general management. For now though I'm more than happy with the direction my career's taking.
